I love all these inspiration messages that you see on social media, they seem to pop up just when you need them. I normally try and take a minute to digest these pearls of wisdom but today, it got me thinking about the other signs in life that often go ignored.
I get asked a lot about how I left a successful corporate career at 30 and parlayed that pretty quickly into a career as a wardrobe stylist. And it all boils down to this: I listened to the signs that were all around me.
Sign 1: The Dream
I had a dream where I was living in a world void of color, everyone in it wore gray and was unhappy. I looked around and saw a beautiful woman dressed in the most vibrant colors and followed her. She lead me into a beautiful, color-filled world and there I was assisting a wardrobe stylist (someone whom I had met a couple weeks earlier). I was watching myself in the dream and I seemed so happy. I woke up in the middle of the night and wrote the dream down because it was so vibrant. And then I ignored it for a year.
Sign 2: The Migraines
Shortly after I started my career in the corporate world, I began to get migraines. They went from yearly occurrences to monthly to weekly and then to bi-weekly until I found myself at the age of 30 on short-term disability. After trying every western medicine available for migraines, I decided to invest in my health and went on a week long "Perfect Health" retreat at the Deepak Chopra Center. It was there that I learned when you have chronic pain, it's you body's way of telling you something is out of balance: your diet, your lifestyle, or in my case, my career. My body was literally telling me, no yelling at me, to change the course of my life.
Sign 3: Intuition
We are all intuitive beings, although we often choose to ignore what our "sixth sense" is telling us. I would say within the first 6 months of starting my job, I knew this wasn't what I wanted to do with my life. And I mean, I really KNEW it wasn't what I wanted to do, but I convinced myself to stay because "the money was good, I got to travel, I had insurance and even a 401k". I put more value on those things than the voice of my soul telling me I was going down the wrong path.
Sign 4: The Move
I wish I could say I moved to LA with a couple dollars in my wallet and a dream just like they do in the movies, but the reality is my company sent me there to work at Universal Studios. The universe or God or Light or whatever we would like to call the Higher Power literally delivered me to the doorsteps of the world in which I wanted to work. But did I jump? Yes, but not until 8 years later.
I share my story and these lovely little images with you as they hopefully will be the sign you have been waiting for pointing you to take a chance on yourself, believe in your intuition, and to follow a dream. It doesn't always have to be as big as quitting your job, maybe it's trying that class you've always wanted to try or learning to speak French or talking to the guy you have a crush on or starting the cookie delivery business you've been thinking about. Whatever it is, I encourage you to take the first step.
As for me, I'm right there with you. I realized I've been ignoring some pretty obvious signs in my life and I intend to start listening and following them.
